Mamie’s Herb Garden

The Mamie’s Way Herb Garden is located in Grinnell, Iowa, on land that was stolen from the Iowa, Sauk, Meskwaki, and Očeti Šakówiŋ (Sioux) peoples.

Most of the plants used in the products for Mamie’s Way Herbs come from my own garden. This means that my supply is limited; the trade off is that I know precisely where the plants have grown and in what conditions. I primarily plant medicinal perennials that I purchase from a local organic farmer. I also purchase plants from other local vendors with no claims of being organic.

Mamie’s Garden is home to echinacea, yarrow, blue vervain, lemon balm, lemon mint, multiple varieties of basil, including Holy Tulsi, chamomile, bee balm, borage, calendula, hyssops, sage, St. John’s Wort, motherwort, feverfew, mullein, and much more. Plantain, violet, and clover grow abundantly in my yard (probably much to the annoyance of my neighbors!).

I am committed to gardening practices that make Mamie’s Garden a safe haven for pollinators, bunnies, and other species. In fact, in 2019, I registered Mamie’s Garden as a Climate Victory Garden!

You can feel confident that the herbal ingredients used in Mamie’s Way products come from a home garden comparable to the ones maintained by healers of the past.

Mamie’s Herb Garden is my sacred space. As I tend the garden, I feel deeply connected to Mother Earth and the people who have lived on and worked this land before me. The Iowa, Sauk, Meskwaki, and Sioux all lived here before white settlers stole their land. When I plunge my hands into the soil, I feel their presence, as well as the presence of the white folk who made this land their home. When I plant, tend, and harvest native prairie plants, such as echinacea, I think about the long generational line of women who also used this plant to care for their loved ones. I hope that by planting healing herbs, I am helping to ameliorate some of the pain and suffering that has taken place in the lifetimes of my biological ancestors and my ancestors of place. In recognition of my privileges and in acknowledgement of this history, Mamie’s Way Herbs makes monthly donations to organizations that support BIPOC women’s health care.
